This Fleam, or blood letting knife, is designed for the early medical practice of bleeding patients as a treatment, and dates from around the turn of the 20th century. The practice of bleeding patients is thought to have dated from about 2000 years ago. Galen of Rome - a student of Hippocrates attributed illness to a lack of balance between the 4 humours - blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile and is thought to have started physician initiated bleeding.
